Çanakkale Battles, one of the biggest struggles of the recent eras, started on 3 November 1914 qith the bombardments of the Turkish coastal defences by the British & French allied armada with the aim of knocking the Ottoman Empire out of the 1st World War and providing the naval communication with their ally Russia in order to support her. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk said in 1934: 'Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives...You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country, therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the johnnies and the mehmets to us where they lie side by side, here in this country of ours... You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears, your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well... Because of its strategic location, Bozcaada was occupied, plundered and destroyed all through the history. According to Herodotos, the first known settlers on this island were Pelasginas (or Pelazzis) circa 2000 years B.C.
